The Month of Adar: A Season of Glory and Deliverance

Introduction: Understanding the Month of Adar

On God’s biblical calendar, the month of Adar holds a unique position as the twelfth and final month of the year (Esther 3:7). The name Adar means "glorious," "magnificent," or "strength." It is a season traditionally associated with the overturning of mourning into joy and the celebration of God’s protective power over His people.

In the year 2026, the month of Adar begins at sunrise on Friday, February 20th, marking the start of a "glorious" transition from the old year into the new spiritual cycle.

Adar in the Holy Scriptures (KJV)

The following references show every mention of the month Adar in the King James Version, listed in the order they appear in the Bible.

1. Ezra 6:15 – The Completion of the Temple

The first mention of Adar occurs during the restoration of Jerusalem. It was during this month that the House of God was finally finished, signaling a time of spiritual completion and glory.

"And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king."

2. Esther 3:7 – The Casting of Lots

In the book of Esther, Adar is central to the narrative. Here, the enemy Haman casts "Pur" (lots) to determine a day to destroy the Jews, and the lot falls on the twelfth month.

"In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar."

3. Esther 3:13 – The Decree of Destruction

A decree was sent out to all the king's provinces to destroy the Jewish people on a specific day in Adar.

"And the letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces... even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey."

4. Esther 8:12 – The Turning of the Tide

After Esther’s intercession, a new decree was issued allowing the Jews to defend themselves on the very day they were meant to be destroyed.

"Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar."

5. Esther 9:1 – The Day of Victory

The Bible records the day the "glorious" power of God reversed the plans of the enemy.

"Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution... it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them."

6. Esther 9:15 – Victory in Shushan

The Jews in the capital city of Shushan continued their victory into the next day.

"For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan..."

7. Esther 9:17 – A Day of Feasting

The 14th of Adar became a day of rest and celebration for those in the provinces.

"On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness."

8. Esther 9:19 – The Joy of Purim

The 14th of Adar is established as a permanent day of joy for the Jewish people.

"Therefore the Jews of the villages... made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another."

9. Esther 9:21 – Establishing the Feast

Mordecai writes to confirm the observance of both the 14th and 15th of the month.

"To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly."

Modern day Israelites will celebrate Purim from the evening of Mon, Mar 2, 2026 – Tue, Mar 3, 2026.

However, according to my calculations, the 14th and 15th Adar should fall on Thursday 5th March and Friday 6th March 2026.

Conclusion: A Season of Strength

As we enter Adar on February 20th, 2026, let us remember that this is the month of the "Glorious" One. Just as the Temple was finished in Adar and the mourning of Esther’s day was turned into feasting, may this twelfth month be a time where your "house" is completed and your "Pur" is turned into a blessing by the hand of God.

In 2026, there is a divergence between the modern Rabbinical calendar and calculations based on the sighting of the new moon. While the world may celebrate earlier, the alternative calculation places the "Days of Feasting" later in the week.
