The focus of the prophecy
Science of lightning, including its direction step-by-step
Lightning is a giant, supercharged spark of electricity. It happens when negative charges in the bottom of a storm cloud build up enough to overpower the insulating air, causing them to rush toward the positive charges on the ground. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Jesus was speaking about a particular type of lightning - namely spider lightning
- comes from the east and shines to the west - Matthew 24: 27.
- shines from one part of the heaven to the other (stretches across the sky) - Luke 17: 24.
Description and science of spider lightning
Key features of spider lightning
Spider lightning (or crawling lightning):
spreads horizontally across the entire sky
branches out like a web or tree roots
covers huge distances in seconds
is highly visible from far away
appears sudden, wide, and inescapable
How Does Spider Lightning Happen?
- Static Electricity: Inside a big, puffy storm cloud, tiny bits of ice and water droplets bump into each other. This creates static electricity, just like rubbing a balloon on your hair. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Building Up: The top of the cloud becomes positively charged and the bottom becomes negatively charged. [1, 2]
- The Web Forms: When the storm is winding down and the clouds spread out, long trails of electricity flash horizontally between the clouds to balance out all the charges. [1, 2]
Cool Facts About Spider Lightning
- They are relatively rare: Spider lightning is considered a relatively rare and fascinating phenomenon.
- They are huge: A single flash can stretch for dozens of miles across the sky.
- Tend to occur when the storm weakens: As the storm weakens, the clouds flatten out, creating a stratified deck of clouds. The electricity crawls horizontally across the base of these clouds, creating intricate, web-like patterns that light up the sky for miles
- Safe from the ground: Because it travels sideways from cloud to cloud high above us, it rarely hits the ground, making it safer to watch (though you should still always stay indoors during a storm).
- Best seen at night: You can only really see the "web" effect when the sky is dark
The Prophetic Meaning Of Spider Lightning
Spider lightning is NOT vertical (like a strike), localized, hidden or secret. It is broad, public, and sky‑spanning. This is the imagery or picture that Jesus used to describe the:
- Roman army spreading across Judea.
- judgment and destruction that would be visible to all.
- impossibility of escaping the judgment.
Like spider lightning, the destruction would be stunning, open, visible, sudden and public. It would not be a secret affair.
This is why Luke emphasizes :
“lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, and shineth unto the other part under heaven” (Lk 17:24)
⚡ Spider Lightning as a Metaphor for the Roman Army in AD 70
For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.
How Titus and his army compared to spider lightning
A. They Were Visible
Just as spider lightning is seen across the whole sky, the Roman army was seen across the whole land.
Josephus repeatedly says:
“the whole country was filled with armed men”
“the fire of their camps shone round about the city”
“the whole region was covered with their ranks”
Just as spider lightning spreads, the Roman legions spread across Judea from:
east (Jericho)
north (Galilee, Samaria)
west (Caesarea, Joppa)
south (Idumea)
B. They Began The Siege Suddenly
Spider lightning flashes instantly.
Josephus says the Roman arrival was:
“sudden”
“unexpected”
“overwhelming”
Titus moved his forces with astonishing speed, often arriving before the Jews realized he was coming: He says the Romans:
“came upon the city sooner than anyone expected”
“arrived suddenly”
“appeared before the walls before the Jews had prepared themselves”
“advanced with such speed that the inhabitants were astonished”
“came upon the city sooner than anyone expected”
“arrived suddenly”
“appeared before the walls before the Jews had prepared themselves”
“advanced with such speed that the inhabitants were astonished”
(War 5.1.6; 5.2.3; 5.3.1)
C. The Roman Army Formed A Branching / Spreading Pattern
In the same way that spider lightning branches like a web, the Roman army advanced in branching columns:
Titus from the west (Spring AD70).
Legio X Fretensis from the east
Auxiliary forces from the south
More on the direction of the Roman Army's east - west approach
A. Legio X Fretensis — From the East
Josephus is explicit:
The 10th Legion marched from Jericho
ascended the Mount of Olives
and appeared directly east of Jerusalem
This is the exact direction Jesus named.
Josephus (War 5.2.3):
“The tenth legion suddenly came upon the city from the Mount of Olives.”
This is the lightning flash.
The Other Legions — Shining to the West
While the 10th Legion came from the east, the other legions approached from:
northwest (Legio XII Fulminata)
north (Legio XV Apollinaris)
west (Legio V Macedonica)
The Roman advance literally spread westward across Judea. Josephus describes:
armor “shining like lightning”
columns “filling the whole region”
the city “surrounded on every side”
The effect was a horizon‑wide flash of metal, moving from east to west.
The Roman army:
spread horizontally across Judea
advanced in branching columns
was visible from miles away
appeared suddenly at Jerusalem
moved east → west
D. The Roman Army Was Public, Not Secret
Spider lightning is impossible to hide. Jesus’ warned them:
“Do not believe anyone who says, ‘He is in the desert’ or ‘in the inner rooms.’” (Matt 24:26)
The real “coming” (judgment) was:
public
geographically massive
unmistakable
Just like spider lightning.
🦅 3. “Where, Lord?” — The Eagles and the Corpse
“Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.” (Luke 17:37)
This is not about vultures. The Greek aetoi = Roman eagles.
The “body” = Jerusalem, spiritually dead (Matt 23:38) and also the death that would occur.
The “eagles gathering” = Roman legions converging.
Spider lightning = the spreading Eagles = the converging
Together they describe:
the approach of Rome
the encirclement of Jerusalem
the desolation of the city
🛡️ 4. How the Roman Army Would Have Appeared (Josephus‑Based Reconstruction)
A. Size and Numbers
Josephus gives us the core forces:
Legio X Fretensis (10th Legion)
Legio V Macedonica (5th Legion)
Legio XII Fulminata (12th Legion)
Legio XV Apollinaris (15th Legion)
Each legion = 5,000–6,000 men Plus:
cavalry
auxiliaries
siege engineers
archers
slingers
Idumean mercenaries
Syrian auxiliaries
Total force around Jerusalem: 60,000–80,000 soldiers (Josephus, War 3.4.2; 5.1.6)
This is a massive, lightning‑like spread of manpower.
B. Formation Appearance
1. Marching Columns
Josephus describes:
long, winding columns
glittering armor
dust clouds rising
standards (eagles) at the front
trumpets sounding
From a distance, these columns would look like:
branches of lightning
lines spreading across the land
2. Encampments
Roman camps were:
square
perfectly measured
surrounded by walls
filled with firelight at night
Josephus says:
“The whole region was lit up by their fires.”
This resembles lightning illuminating the sky.
3. Battle Lines
A Roman battle line was:
wide
shield‑wall bright with metal
spears like “a forest”
standards raised high
Josephus says:
“Their armor shone like lightning.”
This is not metaphor — he literally uses lightning imagery.
C. The Moment of Encirclement (Luke 21:20)
When the Romans finally surrounded Jerusalem:
four legions
auxiliary forces
siege towers
battering rams
catapults
ballistae
Josephus says:
“The city was encircled on every side.”
This is the lightning converging and the eagles gathering.
🔥 Why Jesus’ Lightning Metaphor Is Perfect
Spider lightning:
spreads horizontally
covers huge distances
is instantly visible
is impossible to hide
branches like an invading army
lights up the whole sky
The Roman army:
spread across Judea
advanced in branching columns
was visible to all
moved with sudden force
lit up the night with campfires
converged on Jerusalem like lightning converges on a point
Jesus’ imagery is prophetic precision.
