Did The AD 70 Chariots In The Clouds Represent The Coming of the Son of Man?

🌤 Chariots In The Clouds 🌩In AD70 And The Coming of the Son of Man?

📕Meta Description:

A comprehensive historical and biblical analysis of Luke 21:27 showing how Jesus’ “coming in a cloud with power and great glory” was fulfilled parabolically in AD 70. Includes direct quotations from Josephus, Tacitus, and other ancient historians describing chariots and armies in the sky.

📕Bible Verses About Jesus Coming In The Clouds

 Luk 21:25

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luk 21:26

Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Luk 21:27

And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Luk 21:28

And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

📕Understanding biblical references to God in a cloud

God coming in a cloud is not new. Here are biblical references:

👉 God (Jesus) led Israel by day in a pillar of cloud to guidance, protection and give assurance of His Divine Presence:

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.

He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.

👉 Just before Israel crossed the Red Sea, the cloud  (God) moved between Israel and the Egyptian army to obscure the enemy's view:

Exo 14:19

And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them.

Exo 14:20
So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.

Exo 14:24
Now it came to pass, in the morning watch, that the LORD looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He troubled the army of the Egyptians.

🏕️ God would descend on the Tabernacle in a Cloud when Israel was in the wilderness

Exo 40:34
Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Exo 40:35
And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Exo 40:36
Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would go onward in all their journeys.

Exo 40:37
But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not journey till the day that it was taken up.

Exo 40:38
For the cloud of the LORD was above the tabernacle by day, and fire was over it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

Also

Numbers 12:5 - Jesus descends to judge Miriam and Aaron on the matter of their rebellion against Moses.

Leviticus 16:2 - Jesus appears in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

Exodus 19: 9 - God (Jesus) speaks to Moses in the presence of Israel.

📕 When God comes in the clouds to judge nations

👉 Isaiah prophesied that the Lord would ride to Egypt on a swift cloud in order to judge it.

Look at the amazing similarity of some of the words with Jesus' destruction of the temple prophecy

Isa 19:1
The burden against Egypt.
Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud,
And will come into Egypt;
The idols of Egypt will totter at His presence,
And the heart of Egypt will melt in its midst.

Isa 19:2
“I will set Egyptians against Egyptians;
Everyone will fight against his brother,
And everyone against his neighbor,
City against city, kingdom against kingdom.

Isa 19:3
The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst;
I will destroy their counsel,
And they will consult the idols and the charmers,
The mediums and the sorcerers.

Isa 19:4
And the Egyptians I will give
Into the hand of a cruel master,
And a fierce king will rule over them,”
Says the Lord, the LORD of hosts.

👉Daniel foretold about the judgement of the world super powers when the Son of man comes in clouds:

Dan 7:13
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

Dan 7:14
And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

👉Scriptures therefore show that God also comes in the clouds to judge.

Jesus used almost the same words from Daniel 7: 13 when speaking about the impending destruction of Jerusalem - He will come in clouds to judge it.

I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven...

Luk 21:27

And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

📕But did Jesus actually put in a physical appearance in the clouds in AD70?

Jesus did not physically come in the clouds in AD70, but He sent a sign in the sky four years before the fall of Jerusalem. The sign was a warning and a heavenly demonstration of His divine authority over the nation. Here is the evidence:

👉Josephus’ Eyewitness Account: Chariots in the Clouds (AD 66)

The most dramatic historical confirmation of Jesus' coming in a cloud comes from Flavius Josephus, a priest, general, and eyewitness to the Jewish War.

📅 Timeline: 21st of Artemisius (Iyyar) —  Early May, AD 66

According to Josephus (The Jewish War 6.5.3) multitudes of people across the nation saw chariots and armed battalions hurtling through the clouds. The sign preceded the war by four years, marking the beginning of the judgment cycle.

Isn't this a startling cross reference to the texts in which the Son of man comes in clouds to judge? Therefore we can conclude that this is the exact phenomenon that Jesus described - His coming would be a visible, sky‑borne sign of divine judgment:

“On the twenty-first day of the month Artemisius, a miraculous phenomenon, passing belief, appeared. Before sunset, throughout all parts of the country, chariots were seen in the air, and armed battalions hurtling through the clouds and encompassing the cities.”

🛡️ 3. Tacitus Confirms the Same Event

Roman historian Tacitus, writing independently of Josephus, corroborates the same supernatural signs. He placed these events just before the outbreak of the war, aligning perfectly with Josephus’ AD 66 timeline.

Tacitus, Histories 5.13:

“In the sky appeared a vision of armies in conflict, of glittering armor.”

📕Let's Match The Timing Of Jesus' Coming In The Clouds With The Events In Jerusalem

It is interesting to note that Jesus came in the clouds around the time that the Jewish Revolt was triggered in AD66.

🔥 1. The First Trigger — Eleazar Stops the Sacrifice for Caesar (Late Spring AD 66)

Josephus records that the revolt began when Eleazar ben Ananias, captain of the Temple guard, persuaded the priests to stop offering sacrifices for the Roman emperor. This happened either in Iyyar (month 2) or early Sivan (month 3), roughly May–June AD 66.

This action was considered an act of war against Rome. The event matches the timing of Jesus' coming in the clouds to warn about the war and judgment.

🌄 Eusebius and Early Christian Interpretation of the chariots in the sky

Eusebius (Ecclesiastical History 3.5.3) records that Christians, seeing these signs and remembering Jesus’ warnings, fled to Pella, escaping the destruction:

Luk 21:27

And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

The response of the early Jerusalem church shows that:

  • the Jerusalem Christians understood the signs as fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy

  • The “coming” of the Son of Man was already occurring in their generation

  • The judgment was directed at Jerusalem, not the world

🌬️ How These Chariots In The Sky Fulfilled Luke 21:27

“They shall see…”

The signs were public, visible, and widely reported.

“…the Son of Man coming in a cloud…”

In biblical imagery, clouds signify:

  • Divine presence

  • Judgment

  • Heavenly authority (Daniel 7:13)

The heavenly armies in the clouds are a parabolic manifestation of the Son of Man’s authority.

“…with power and great glory.”

If you believe Jesus' Word, you can be saved from eternal damnation.
