1. “Jerusalem surrounded by armies”

Prophecy:

Jesus said the sign of the end was unmistakable:

“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that her desolation is near.”
(Luke 21:20)

Fulfillment:

Josephus records that Titus surrounded Jerusalem with four legions in early April AD 70.
This created a full military ring around the city:

  • 10th Legion → Mount of Olives / Scopus
  • 12th & 5th Legions → North side
  • 15th Legion → West side

Josephus (War 5.2.3):

The Romans “encompassed the city round about.”

This is the exact phrase Jesus used.

2. “Your enemies will build a barricade/embankment around you”

Prophecy:

Jesus predicted a literal engineering project:

“Your enemies will build an embankment (χαράκωμα) around you.”
(Luke 19:43)

Fulfillment:

Titus ordered the construction of a 5‑mile circumvallation wall + trench around Jerusalem.

Josephus says:

  • It was completed in 3 days
  • It had 39 towers
  • It completely cut off escape
  • It starved the city into submission

Josephus (War 5.12.2):

“They built a wall around the whole city.”

This is the most direct, literal fulfillment of any prophecy Jesus gave about the siege.

3. “Hem you in on every side”

Prophecy:

Jesus said the Romans would trap the city:

“They will hem you in on every side.”
(Luke 19:43)

Fulfillment:

Josephus describes:

  • No one could leave
  • No food could enter
  • Anyone attempting escape was crucified
  • The city was sealed like a prison

The circumvallation wall created a total chokehold.

Josephus (War 5.12.3):
“All hope of escaping was now cut off.”

4. “They will dash you to the ground”

Prophecy:

Jesus warned of catastrophic slaughter:

“They will dash you to the ground, you and your children within you.”
(Luke 19:44)

Fulfillment:

Josephus records:

  • Over 1.1 million died (mostly from famine)
  • Tens of thousands were slaughtered in the Temple
  • Children died in the famine
  • Bodies filled the streets
  • The Romans showed no mercy

Josephus (War 6.9.3):
“The whole city ran with blood.”

5. “Not one stone left upon another”

Prophecy:

Jesus said the Temple would be completely destroyed:

“Not one stone will be left upon another that will not be thrown down.”
(Matthew 24:2)

Fulfillment:

Josephus records:

  • The Temple was burned on 9 Av
  • The gold melted between the stones
  • Soldiers pried the stones apart to retrieve it
  • The entire complex was dismantled
  • Only the retaining walls and three towers remained

Josephus (War 7.1.1):

“Caesar ordered the whole city and the Temple to be razed to the ground.”

6. “Great distress… unequaled”

Prophecy:

Jesus said the suffering would be unparalleled:

“There will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people.”
(Luke 21:23)

Fulfillment:

Josephus describes:

  • Famine so severe mothers ate their children
  • Civil war inside the city
  • Zealots burning food supplies
  • Mass crucifixions
  • Starvation, disease, and slaughter

Josephus (War 5.10.5):
“No other city ever suffered such miseries.”

7. “Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles”

Prophecy:

Jesus said Gentile domination would follow:

“Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles.”
(Luke 21:24)

Fulfillment:

After AD 70:

  • Romans leveled the city
  • Titus left only three towers
  • The city became a Roman military camp
  • Survivors were enslaved or scattered

Josephus confirms the city was left desolate and under Roman control.

8. “Your house is left to you desolate”

Prophecy:

Jesus declared judgment on the Temple:

“Your house is left to you desolate.”
(Matthew 23:38)

Fulfillment:

Josephus says:

  • The Temple was burned
  • The sanctuary was desecrated
  • The priesthood was killed
  • The sacrificial system ended
  • The city was emptied

The “house” (Temple) was literally left desolate.
